“A tribute to the rock and roll lifestyle in New York City.”

(Press release)

Photographer Nico Malvaldi and US leading artisanal mezcal producer Ilegal Mezcal, join forces to bring a collection of photographs of the contemporary underground music scene of New York City to Greenpoint (Brooklyn.)

On Saturday July 16 the exhibit will open at Ilegal Mezcal’s HQ (38 Greenpoint ave.) presenting a local rock band, Dead Tooth, in concert.

Nico Malvaldi’s exhibition is made of thirty 20”x28” black and white prints and the whole series of self publish “paper”, MANI, also testimony of the long lasting collaboration between the photographer and the international mezcal brand.

The subject of the exhibit is rock and roll, and everything around it. The idea behind the installation is to convey the feeling of being in a bar and looking around yourself: tattoos, leather pants, leopard print, booze, and a lot of rock and roll!

The doors will open at 12pm until 7pm, the concert will take place sometimes around 5:30pm. The exhibit will be viewable Saturdays and Sundays 12-5pm.

The photographer statement reads as follow:

New York City is in black-and-white in my mind.

The stories I’ve read, songs I’ve listened to, and movies I’ve watched, have altogether created this monochromatic fantasy world where bars, bands and people of the underground music scene all live.

The gritty quality of the black-and-white film I use and the “dirty” feel of the newsprint paper on which I print my portfolios, help to convey the aesthetic of the “space” I like my photographs to inhabit.

I find imperfection to be both sincere and attractive. Film and newsprint paper allow me to tell stories which are both nostalgic, and in the “digital world” of today, somewhat avant-garde.
